The program series ‘Circularity in Action’ will tell how Latvia is performing in implementing a circular economy
Continuing to popularize the topic of the circular economy in Latvia, CleanR Grupa, in cooperation with the TV3 program ‘900 seconds’, is implementing the program series ‘Circularity in Action’, in which every Wednesday it will examine one of the topics of circularity through practical examples.
Studying global practice, it is clear that not one player is alone. “In order for us to successfully transition to a circular economy at the national level, everyone must get involved. At a time when each economic participant has their own role – society, the non-governmental sector, the academic sector, entrepreneurs, municipalities, state institutions are doing something – each of us, acting in our own area of responsibility, can also successfully achieve results,” says Agita Baltbārde, member of the board of CleanR Grupa, European Climate Pact Ambassador in Latvia.
In 2024, the first Latvian Circular Economy Index was created at the initiative of the CleanR Group. It is based on a methodology developed by Latvian scientists and a study that allows us to assess how we are doing with the implementation of circularity in Latvia and its municipalities. Work will soon begin on the next index, which will allow us to compare data and assess progress. The study on Latvian municipalities shows a positive picture, Agita Baltbārde said in an interview on the ‘900 seconds’ program on Wednesday, October 8.
“The good news is that the largest group – almost half of Latvia’s 43 municipalities – is in the group called “Practitioners”. This means that, yes, maybe a strategy document has not been developed, maybe not all possible cooperation parties are involved, but things have started – step by step. When implementing such a large process, perhaps the most important thing is to start with something,” Baltbārde comments on the results of the study.
The first episode of the series addressed the issue of circularity in relation to water resources in everyday life. Other topics will be covered on the following Wednesdays, such as material reuse, bio-waste management, circular business opportunities, and more.
